3-way Perspective
Ranging From Research To Creation and Training…
As part of the Regards Croisés program, the MCM, in collaboration with the Music for the Image course of the Satis department - Aix-Marseille University, welcomes 3 European schools: Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf (Germany), Iceland University of the Arts (Iceland), Zurich University of the Arts (Switzerland) for a residency in musical composition for the image.
The students will work together for ten days in the writing of new musical scores for short films, which will be performed in a film concert by an orchestra composed of musicians from the Conservatoire National à Rayonnement Régional Pierre Barbizet of Marseille
Regards Croisés is divided into two events:
The screening of short films highlighting the work of students participating in Regards Croisés followed by a meeting moderated by Yati Durant.
- The film concert, interpretation of musical works written by the students participating in the composition residency and played by the musicians of the CNRR of Marseille.
Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF
The Film Music Master program at Film University Babelsberg “Konrad Wolf” is for young musicians with a music related Bachelor degree. The idea is to allow students with different profiles in terms of musical styles (Classical, Pop, Jazz, etc.) to develop their individual approaches and styles in relation to film. There is a two-step admission process with a pre-selection based on work samples (scores, audio, audiovisual) and an admission test.
The program comprises personalized instruction, lectures, small-sized courses, and interdisciplinary projects allowing for the collaboration with other programs. The integration of the program into the film university's interdisciplinary concept results in a wide range of opportunities to collaborate with students from other programs in university projects. During the implementation of these projects, Film Music students integrate themselves into the production teams, they collaboratively develop and communicate film music concepts and they compose and produce the music.
Iceland University of the Arts
In the BA program in Composition, students can study conventional instrumental composition or new media, where the emphasis is placed on the use of electronic and computer technology to create music.
The program emphasizes providing students with broad-based knowledge of music creation and giving them the tools needed to use it. Students have the opportunity to compose for various combinations of conventional instruments, including solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestras, and choirs. They learn to use digital media for music creation and to combine conventional and experimental performance practices. Students have the possibility of working on projects in collaboration with the Icelandic Film School, the IUA Theatre Department, the Ungfónía youth orchestra, and various smaller chamber groups as needed.
In the near future, we expect to be able to give a more varied list of courses dealing with filmmaking in collaboration with the new Film Department of the IUA that has recently been established..
Zurich University of the Arts
The program «Composition for Film, Theatre and Media» enjoys something of a unique position at Zurich University of the Arts, enabling students to enjoy highly practical and interdisciplinary training with a wide variety of profiles relating to «functional music». The program aims to combine a number of things: artistic ambition, a solid and diverse skill set, and working on one’s own profile as a composer on the one hand, with the functionality of composition and a focus on its applications and marketability on the other.
Working in a complex team, encountering other disciplines involving art and design, and working with state-of-the-art technology: these are not just simulated, but can be incorporated into projects in a way which also reflects the reality of the work done by professionals at the highest level. Composers, conductors and musicians all come together within a single institution, along with actors, scenographers, game designers and film directors.
