Workshop in Musical Composition for Cinema

With the support of Sacem, the Festival International Music & Cinema Marseille (MCM) organizes a Masterclass in Musical Composition for Cinema every year. Directed by experienced and talented composers, this Masterclass allows up to ten young composers and musicians to participate in a 10-day intensive workshop, revisiting the original music of several short films or film excerpts. The aim is to create a finished work for MCM’s closing ceremony and perform a public presentation of this film-concert, interpreted by the students.

Master Class 2025

This year, the Masterclass in Music Composition for Film will take place from March 19 to March 29, 2025, as part of the 26th edition of the Festival, running from March 24 to March 29, 2025. Designed as a professional training program in music composition for film, it will include composition exercises for short films or a feature film, culminating in the creation of a cine-concert. The completed work will be presented to an audience on Saturday, March 29, 2025, during the closing night of the Festival international Music & Cinema Marseille (MCM). This cine-concert will feature the screening of the film(s) accompanied by a live musical performance by the selected young composer-performers.

Applications will be open from Monday, December 9, 2024, to Sunday, January 26, 2025, until 11:59 p.m.

Erwann Kermorvant will lead the next Master Class

Erwann Kermorvant is a multifaceted composer known for his ability to seamlessly move between genres and disciplines, from short films to television series and feature films. As a close collaborator of Olivier Marchal, he is best known for his work in the crime genre, but he is equally accomplished in composing for comedies, action films, and dramas. His talent lies in blending orchestral composition with musical programming with ease.

His musical journey began at the age of 7 at the Conservatoire in Lorient, where he discovered the clarinet. Later, he moved to the United States to study film music under Ralph Grierson, a renowned Hollywood studio keyboardist. Driven by this passion, Erwann attended the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles before specializing in film music at UCLA.

From short films to television series (Pax Massilia, Astrid et Raphaëlle), and popular action or comedy films (Mais qui a tué Pamela Rose?, La Première Étoile, La Deuxième Étoile, Prête-moi ta main, 36 Quai des Orfèvres), Erwann Kermorvant has become one of the leading composers in the French audiovisual industry.
