Venice 1596. In order to woo the beautiful Portia, Bassanio asks his friend Antonio, a talented merchant, to lend him a large sum of money. Forced to borrow the money from the Jewish usurer Shylock, Antonio promises to give him a pound of his flesh if he cannot repay the loan on the agreed date.
